All about The Church of Maradona

The Iglesia Maradoniana or Church of Maradona in English; literally Maradonian Church is a religion, created by fans of the late Argentine football player Diego Maradona, whom they believe to be the best player of all time.

The Iglesia was founded on October 30, 1998 (Maradona’s 38th birthday) in the city of Rosario, Argentina by three fans (Héctor Campomar, Alejandro Verón and Hernán Amez).

It could be seen as a type of syncretism or as a religion, depending on what religious definition one chooses to use. It was said by Alejandro Verón, one of the founders: “I have a rational religion, and that’s Catholic Church, and I have a religion passed on my heart, passion, and that’s Diego Maradona.” Supporters of the Maradonian Church, supposedly from all parts of the world, count the years since Maradona’s birth in 1960.

These members, also called “Maradonianos” even have their own calendar which starts in 1960 (the year Maradona was born) and they are currently (2020) in 60AD (yes, AD stands for After Diego). Their goal is to “keep the passion and the magic of God alive and help people remember the miracles he performed on the football pitch day by day before the eyes of millions of fans.”

Ten Commandments in Church of Maradona

The “Ten Commandments” of the Iglesia Maradoniana are:

1- The ball is never soiled.
2- Love football above all else.
3- Declare unconditional love for Diego and the beauty of football.
4- Defend the Argentina shirt.
5- Spread the news of Diego’s miracles throughout the universe.
6- Honor the temples where he played and his sacred shirts.
7- Don’t proclaim Diego as a member of any single team.
8- Preach and spread the principles of the Church of Maradona.
9- Make Diego your middle name and name your first son Diego.
10- Don’t live estranged from reality and don’t be useless.

In 1998, a bunch of soccer fans decided they were so deeply, deeply in awe of one single soccer player, Diego Maradona, that it simply was not enough to start a fan club. Instead, they began a church to worship him. The church of Maradona.

In this church, Diego Maradona is God. Not just soccer, but of everything. A list of commandments was created for followers of the church to revere and obey They are:

– The ball must not be stained, as D10S has proclaimed.
– Love football over all things.
– Declare your unconditional love of football.
– Defend the colors of Argentina.
– Preach the words of “Diego Maradona” all over the world.
– Pray in the temples where he preached, and to his sacred mantles.
– Do not proclaim the name of Diego in the name of a single club.
– Follow the teachings of the Maradonian Church.
– Let Diego be your second name, and that of your children.
“No ser Cabeza de termo y que no se te escape la Tortuga.” (Meaning “don’t be a hothead and don’t let the turtle escape you”).

As commanded, members of the church must change their middle name to Diego and name their son Diego.

They refer to the miraculous football legend as D10s using a ten in place of the I and O because that was Diego’s jersey number. Dios means god in Spanish.

At this point, you’re probably chuckling to yourself and thinking this is all a big joke. You’d be wrong, though. There are 80,000 members of the church of Maradona worldwide.
